Arthur C. Clarke’s line about sufficiently advanced technology being indistinguishable from magic gets quoted a lot, usually about something flashy. It applies more precisely to augmented reality than almost anything else in consumer tech — because AR’s whole premise is convincing your senses that two layers of reality are actually one.
That’s also the security problem in miniature. If an overlay can convincingly sit on top of the physical world, a malicious overlay can too — a spoofed sign, a faked interface, a false prompt rendered directly into someone’s field of view with no browser chrome or URL bar to double-check against. We’re still early enough that most of this is theoretical. It won’t stay that way.
Worth remembering as this stuff gets closer to mainstream: the illusion being seamless is the feature. It’s also exactly what makes it worth staying skeptical of.
